Brief and Trunks: Konbini, A Japanese Meme

America isn’t the only country who fancies themselves internet joke slingers.  I happened upon the above video featuring Cloud from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children taking a trip to a convenience store (aka konbini) in the middle of the night.  What, this isn’t “real news” you say?  Hey, I was snowed in, all right?  I found the video hilariously random, but suspected there was something behind it all.

It turns out the song comes from a band named Brief and Trunks. They are notorious for writing novelty songs; think Weird Al Yankovic only less embarrassing to listen to.  Anyway, Foxes found the original video which the meme is based on:

It has since been replicated to an amazing degree, using characters from a number of popular anime, video games, movies, etc.  Here are a few to give you an idea:

Convenience stores in Japan are indeed open 24 hours and are a great place to waste time and spend some money.  In the song the narrator asks for oden, a winter hot pot dish which is served at konbini.  Out of revenge for the amateur delivery of change, he/she order 3 eggs with extra broth, which is effectively three soft-boiled eggs floating in a bunch of soup….

Here is a better translation of the lyrics which I think adds to the humor a bit.  If the song gets stuck in your head (which it will…) you can download the MP3 here.  I really only included videos which are gaming related, but there are WAY more which are just as amusing, like this one from The Dark Knight.  Just type konbini into YouTube or Nico Nico Douga, grab a root beer, and let the good times roll.
