Cover Art

Atlus has decided to give fans of Etrian Odyssey a chance at winning a 3-Disc version of the sequel’s original soundtrack. The contest, which has been dubbed Storytellers of Lagaard, is rather simple:

The … contest offers Etrian Odyssey fans an opportunity to work together to weave a beautiful narrative tapestry. For example:

Poster A:
“You see a bubbling brook. Your parched lips tremble from the promise of sweet, refreshing rejuvenation. What do you do?”

Poster B:
“You drink from the brook. As you rise from the ground, an FOE leaps out from in front of you. The creature has ambushed you!”

If this is to vague, feel free to check out the contest’s official rules at Atlus’s forum.

In addition to the Storytellers of Lagaard contest, Atlus has opened a Facebook fansite. They only have about 90 fans right now (including me!), but the site still has a good amount of info on the game. It will probably be updated frequently as well. If you are a fan of the series go show your support!

If you are too lazy to enter the contest, but wouldn’t mind giving the OST a listen, you can check out one of my posts to download the standard edition.

If you have never played the first game, you can still find copies at Amazon.com here. You can also pre-order Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard for $29.99 here.

Album Cover

It seems the gaming world is abuzz over Square Enix’s The World Ends With You, and for good reason. It is without a doubt one of the best RPGs to find it’s way onto the Nintendo DS.

The soundtrack is the type that slowly seeps into your brain while playing. Before you know it, you’ll be at work or cooking dinner unconsciously singing a song from the game in nonsensical English.

If you enjoyed Persona 3’s Burn Your Dread OST, you may also like this soundtrack. Both feature an upbeat hip-hop style complete with record scratching and Japanese girls rapping.

2-Disc special edition

This is the soundtrack that is included with the special, nearly $90.00 edition of the game. It is a 2 disc set, with much more content than the standard OST. I did not upload it myself, I give all credits to the infamous Chinese blogger rpgmm. I am simply a catalyst for the English portion of the internets. If you have not yet, please check out his site, you will not regret it. We will almost certainly not be getting this edition stateside.

It is clear by listening to a few songs the the production value has been stepped up. “魔立邪悪学園”, or “Maritsu Evil Academy” in particular sounds like a fully orchestrated production. The song reminds me of a mix between classic Disgaea music and Nightmare Before Christmas. As always, the soundtrack features some more melancholy songs like” 一人ぼっちの部屋” or “Lonely Room”. I particularly fell in love with “Extreme outlaw 王者”, roughly translated to “Extreme Outlaw King“. For those of you who are eagerly awaiting the game, hopefully this hearty soundtrack will tide you over for the next few months.

Baroque OST cover

Baroque is being released April 8th in North America. To celebrate, here is the OST to the game. It is entirely instrumental, with songs that vary from the energetically charged “Endless Redemption”, to the slower and more solemn “Spilling Tears.” I think that Sting did a good job producing a cohesion between art, music, and graphics to create the overall mood of the game. The songs sound very futuristic and synthetic and give an impression of intensity mixed with sorrow.
