Catherine: First Trailer and Speculations

A trailer for Atlus’s recently announced title, Catherine was released today.  It gives us an initial glimpse at what an Atlus game in high-def looks like, and I have to say that I love it.  It’s a clean and stylish translation of the anime style, one which I couldn’t really imagine being pulled off in the HD generation.  Atlus proved it can be done right!  According to the trailer, the game features animated cut-scenes which are relatively high quality when compared to those in last generation’s Persona titles.  We can thank STUDIO4℃ for that.

The trailer begins with Vincent in a bar.  He is talking to someone who we cannot see.

“Have you ever had a dream where you die?”

“No, I haven’t.  But I have had a dream where I killed someone,” an unknown girl (presumably Catherine) replies.

After that the Persona staff members are introduced and then we see a sheep fall to an unfortunate end, and then a news reporter talks about the mysterious and grisly deaths happening lately.  These deaths are attributed to an urban legend of those who dream of falling and not waking up before they hit the ground.  I believe the trailer suggests the dead guy is the lamb we saw fall, or at least establishes the connection between the two.

Next there is a steamy bedroom scene between Vincent and Catherine.  There is some mumbling prior to that but it’s really hard to make out with the background music.

“You seem to have grown fond of me… You can do whatever you’d like with me,”  Catherine says.

“What… What is this?” Vincent asks.

This cues the awesome song which I believe is sung by Lotus Juice.  We meet a few new people in the trailer:

These guys appear to be Vincent’s friends who are at a kaiten sushi restaurant, but there are some scenes of a bar as well.  These characters probably aren’t important to the story, but it’s too early to say.  They sure look like Westerners, don’t they?  I am still a bit confused as to how this game takes place in the world of Persona 3 and Persona 4 and yet the characters are so Western in both name and appearance. This trailer dashed my belief that the game may have featured English voice acting (a la No More Heroes) in the Japanese version.

There was one character however who caught my eye. The bartender:

Does anyone else get a total Igor vibe from him? Considering the emphasis placed on the bar in what we have seen, it seems highly likely that this bartender character will prove important. To further solidify my speculation, the bartender is shown again right before the end of the trailer (~2:20). Could he be some intermediary between the dream world and reality?

The trailer ends with another woman, presumably Vincent’s ex-girlfriend whom he cheated on saying:

“Because I can absolutely never forgive you!”  Ouch.

Most everything else in the trailer is disjointed and really doesn’t explain much. It mostly serves to show off the game’s style and art direction which both look very refreshing.  I was not expecting a trailer this soon, but am really excited by what I see.  I expect the next big update will come when the game’s website opens on the 23rd.
