Catherine: Second Trailer Translation and Speculation

Today the second trailer for Catherine scheduled to be shown at Tokyo Game Show was published on Famitsu’s website.  It doesn’t disappoint in terms of raciness, but focuses more on the newly introduced Katherine.  Here is my translation of the video:

Katherine:
Hey, are you listening?
Recently, my parents called me up.
“What’s wrong?” they asked.
“You’re not hiding anything from me right?”

Vincent: (blushing)
But… this pose…

It is certainly an awesome trailer, but I had hoped Tokyo Game Show would reveal something about Catherine’s gameplay. Hopefully all is not lost since technically Tokyo Game Show hasn’t even started yet.  Anyway, I am going get right into my speculation which may have some spoilers so only read on if you wish.

The trailer brought a few interesting images before us.  Let’s go in order while it’s still all fresh in your mind.

Katherine talked to her parents and it sounds like things were rather serious.  It looks like they had more to say than she is admitting though:

How long are you gonna stay with him? Beyond matrimonial age?

Now this is a rather unlikely thing to appear on a billboard, even in Japan where the English language is beaten like a rented mule.  I believe it’s a projection of part of the conversation between Katherine and her parents.  Is the person on the billboard also Katherine?  That I am not sure about.  Either way this shows that Katherine may be stressed out and is in fact hiding something.

Next we see Vincent’s eyes, presumably upon waking from one of his Catherine-induced nightmares:

They look an awful lot like sheep’s eyes don’t they?  Creepy.

Meanwhile, back in the dream world, I noticed this painting for the first time:

It seems to show someone being crucified with a ring over their head making them resemble an ankh, or the symbol for female.  It also looks like there is another ankh hanging from the person’s right arm; presumably the symbol for male is hanging from the left arm but I wasn’t able to confirm this.

Next we are shown a couple of the enemies (possibly bosses) in the game.  The theme seems to be that they take the form of Vincent’s fears.  First we saw the glasses-wearing-woman dressed in a wedding dress wielding a knife.  This would obviously suggest a fear of marriage or commitment.

The next monster in the trailer is well… this thing:

I really am not sure what this monster takes the form of.  All I know is that it’s flesh-colored, and well… rather… buttock-shaped or perhaps breast-shaped.  Truly bizarre.  May show a fear of becoming physically close or regret over infidelity.

The other monster is thankfully much easier to understand:

Well, maybe calling a robot baby with chainsaws for arms easy to understand is a bit much.  But this almost certainly has to do with Vincent being told that Katherine is possibly pregnant.

After this, my good friend the bartender makes a return, looking more evil than he has in the past:

I still think wearing sunglasses inside is messed up, unless of course he is blind.  Notice that it says stray sheep on the chalkboard behind him?  “Oh, the soup du jour you ask?  A fresh bowl of get-the-hell-up-that-tower.”

Next I noticed this and thought it was plain funny:

"Italian stallion rider equipments since 2009"

Moving on, I am starting to suspect that Katherine and Catherine are in fact the same person.  Reasoning?  You asked for it:

  1. The game’s icon features a face split down the middle; one half Catherine’s, the other half Katherine’s
  2. Katherine’s apparent obsession with Vincent which is rather creepy
  3. Phonetically, they share the same name (duh)
  4. Catherine is continually described as mysterious suggesting she has no known past, sharply contrasting with what we know about the other two protagonists.

Possible speculation to back this up:

  • Katherine seems to have a weaker personality and gets pushed.  If someone in her situation were to create another personality it seems likely it would be a stronger self to balance things out and get shit done.
  • Katherine works at a clothing company, possibly allowing her access to Catherine’s sexy clothing.
  • Vincent’s nightmares may be the result of something having possessed Katherine, which also caused Catherine to surface.
  • Who are you less likely to meet than your boyfriend’s secret mistress?  It’s the perfect crime.

Again this is all speculation, but what can I say, I love doing this kinda stuff even if I may be ruining things for myself.  Between the translation and the speculation it all feels like a great big puzzle I am unraveling.  Hopefully Atlus Japan will throw us something else to work with before this year’s Tokyo Game Show draws to a close.  If so, you can bet I will be picking it apart like it’s my job!
