Christian Svensson Answers Your Burning Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Questions

The Ask Capcom section of the Capcom-Unity forums have entered rage mode as scores of gamers ask questions about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.  Surprisingly enough, the community managers at Capcom are stepping up and providing some (somewhat) concrete answers:

Will there be a package that includes both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate?

The answer is no, however the North American Capcom E-store will likely have something attractive as a “soft bundle” to offer if you do purchase both.

Darin should have some details up in the next couple weeks. [source]

Is there any way to transfer save data from JP version to US version?

Not that I’m aware of. Remember, the Western version is slightly different from the Japan version and the 3DS tends to be region locked. I’d think a bigger obstacle for most people would be the need to have a Japanese 3DS and a US 3DS, each with copies of the game rather than putting in a couple hundred hours catching up your save. That said, no one in our office has done any tests on that front. Without final code that would be impossible for us to test and we’re still a couple months away from that. [source]

Is adding wifi playing functionality for 3DS version possible?

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely at this point. Trust me, we’ve had internal debates a-plenty about it over the years. [source]

How will you handle the existing Monster Hunter Tri servers and players still playing online with the Wii ? Will this version coexist with 3 Ultimate or are you shutting it and its online for the new one ?

At some point in time (I’m not saying when… we’ll give everyone a heads up well in advance when we make that decision) we will sunset the Tri servers which are hosted by KDDI in Japan. I was adamant that we not do so until we had a proper alternative title to allow people to migrate to if they wish. It would have been bad just cut people off with no other place for them to hunt, in spite of the significant costs of operation. [source]

Will it be possible to transfer/convert a Tri save to 3 Ultimate ? Or do we have to start from scratch again?

I do not believe save transfers from Wii to Wii U or 3DS will be possible that I’m aware of. You get to experience some portion of the original title again. Remember, it’s about the journey, not the destination. [source]

Region specific servers?

This element I still need some clarity on. Obviously, cross territory network performance even if matching is possible, could have issues. For Wii U we’re using Nintendo’s servers (which I’m very happy about) and I’m not sure how they’re set up. Candidly, we’re still waiting for Wii U builds in our office to play with and there’s still many moving parts that no one except for the team members has first hand experience with at this point. We have six months until release (roughly). We’ll have a lot more detail on these and other questions (most of which we DO know the answers to) as we move through the communications/marketing campaign and run-up to launch. [source]

I don’t know if you have any input on this but i wanted to ask about the localisation of the games…  As i understand it 8-4 did the English translation and Binari Sonori the rest. Can you assure me that it’s not them translating 3 Ultimate for Wii U and 3DS?

There’s a number of layers and steps in our localization process… and while 8-4 I was involved (I love their work and have been friends with some of them long before they were at 8-4 and I was at Capcom) there are also internal folks within Capcom Japan who do cleanup and oversight on all of the EFIGS language localization process. I’m also not sure what, if any other external shops were involved in the process. I know the guys on our loc team and obviously I understand the quality of our English translations but how the sausage gets made for other languages I really don’t have a lot of visibility into. Sorry. [source]

I wouldn’t hold out much hope for save transfers or servers shared among regions — that would almost certainly require more planning and execution on Capcom’s part than it is really worth in their eyes.

It will be a sad day when the Monster Hunter Tri servers close.  I’ve spent so many hours there and met so many people… it’s like a world in and of itself!  Why, Monster Hunter Tri was the Monster Hunter that created the very same monster writing this post!  Well, I suppose all good things must come to an end.  I will make it my mission to go down with the ship, like those brave musicians aboard the Titanic.  Only instead of playing a string instrument I hope to have a Deviljho eat my face off.
