Cross Edge: Localization Pains

Now that NIS America has announced Cross Edge, they are starting to reveal more information on the game.  NIS’s PR superstar Nao Zook had an interview with the gang at RPGamer.com about Cross Edge.  As with most interviews, the amount of concrete info given was pretty scarce, but there was some important stuff too I guess.

First they touched on the importance of the game’s name.  I wasn’t aware that it was that important but whatever.  Apparently the logo changed ever so slightly to now include the actual word “Cross.”  Here are the two logos side by side:

Japanese Logo

US Logo

Japanese Logo US Logo

I think I like the Japanese logo better, but I can see how NIS wants to eliminate confusion on how the game is pronounced.  We’ve all had troubles there…

Then I saw something that made me angry concerning the game’s hero.  In Japanese, his name is Kannagi Yuto, which in kanji is ?? ??.  It is a very dramatic name by Japanese standards, but pretty cool in my opinion.  For some reason NIS America took it upon themselves to change his name to… York Neely.  Allow me to give you a moment for the lameness of that to sink in.

Just when I lost all hope… I reminded myself that NIS did keep the Japanese voice acting.  Then this made me realize that with the Japanese dialog, characters will refer to York as Yuto, but the text will read York.  My world is falling to pieces around me.

Then frequent commenter Jink (at my own masochistic request) provided me with a link which reveals some English voice acting for the Cross Edge localization.  I went ahead and included the video here:

Can ears vomit?  Can vomit cry?  I think both of those things happened after I heard this.

Still, I guess it’s irrelevant since I had no intention of listening to the English voice acting.  I guess my biggest upset is just over the hero’s name change.  I am having Persona: Revelations flashbacks!  I know it’s not that severe, but I sill feel violated.

Ok, wow.. just wow. I think they recycled the same Male voice actor three times in that whole thing (at least twice). The best voices were, of course, Etna and the Prinny! And i also feel like I’m the only looking at this game and wondering “WHY THE HECK IS LAHARL NOT IN IT?!?” His sheer presence might make the English Voices more bearable!

I agree Laharl’s voice acting is infinitely better than those shown in the video. I am kinda glad that Etna is getting her own recognition a bit though… Still I wouldn’t be surprised if Laharl and/or Flonne made an appearance.
