Disgaea 2 Portable: Ark Ranger

I know I keep talking about the upcoming Japanese Disgaea 2 port to PSP, and I seem to be wanting it a little more with each update.  At first I had convinced myself I did not want to tackle another Disgaea title, especially one I have already sufficiently throttled.  But unlike other ports NIS makes, it really seems like this title is getting some substantial additions.

Let’s start with the newly added Axel mode, which is the biggest update.  The story has been revealed and is classic NIS:

Story

Axel’s chapter takes place before Adell’s mother attempted to summon the Demon King Zenon.  The once popular “Dark Hero,” known to us as Axel, suddenly became unpopular due to an unknown incident.  Now the only jobs Axel can get are ordinary ones – this chapter chronicles his decline.

Axel does not let his family know that he is a washed up hack, especially his younger brother who idolizes him.  Since Axel is the eldest son, he is responsible for paying the bills no matter what.  Suddenly a job opportunity arises which would allow for Axel to reclaim his popularity. Axel is given the choice of appearing on 1 of 2 different TV programs: one is a popular children’s program about a masked hero, the other is a travel program going to a place called Veldime.  Not surprisingly, Axel selects the hero show.

As you may have noticed in the PV video at the top of this post, several features from Disgaea 3 have been imported into the port.  These features include Magichange as well as Throw/Receive, two upgrades which make monster class units much less awkward to keep in your party.  There also appears to be a new form of Magichange involving 2 monsters.  No details have been given on this yet sadly.

Since there are some characters in Disgaea 2 who don’t appear in the 3rd installment, that means there are some brand new Magichange combos to appreciate.  As you all should know by now, I have an unhealthy obsession with Asagi.  At first I was a bit upset to see that while she is a playable character in Disgaea 2, she has been made into a monster class unit.  That was until I saw her Magichange form:

That is one sweet weapon. I can only imagine the awesome Magichange skills that come with it.

I was also happy to see (in the video) that the newly added Saber Kitty has been given a nice area affecting skill. The move is called “Death Wing” (1:37-1:40) and appears to have to have the area of affect shown at the right.  I usually stop using my Saber Kitty in the post game because it lacks a skill which can kill multiple targets, so I am happy to see I can now rely on one for long term. ???

Between the quirky new story, and the welcomed updates, Disgaea 2 Portable is looking increasingly more appealing.  The game comes out late next month in Japan, so I expect a statement from NIS America very soon!
