Dissidia: Final Fantasy

Zidane fighting Kuja in Dissidia

Does anyone out there remember Ehrgeiz?  No?  Well it’s probably for the best.  The only good part of the game was the fact that you could do battle with your friends, by controlling characters from Final Fantasy VII.  It looks like Square-Enix wants to take it a step further, and make a fighting game with nothing but characters from the Final Fantasy series.  Now don’t get too excited, so far it is only confirmed that there will be the main heroes and villans from each game, i.e., Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.

The title is currently in the works for the PSP, and looks like it should be very unique as far as fighting games are concerned.  Like any other fighting game, the goal is to beat the snot out of your opponent, without getting the snot beat out of you.  But there are a bunch of  unique features to keep it interesting:

  • RPG elements: You can level your characters, and buy/earn them stronger weapons, earn gil etc.
    • Earn EXP by: Getting first attack in a battle, playing through the story, defeating opponent etc.
  • 3-D fighting environment: complete with traps, power-ups, and terrain you can interact with.
  • Brave: A stat that affects a characters strength.  It is possible to deplete an opponents Brave with a certain type of attack.  The more Brave a character has, the stronger they will be.  Receiving damage to your hit points also causes Brave to rise, so taking some blows may be a decent strategy.
  • Miscellaneous action elements:  Deflect enemy magic attacks, dodge-roll, jump and/or double jump etc.
  • BREAK: A status inflicted when a characters Brave reaches 0.  Most likely, it is similar to Limit Break of the older titles; your damage will increase dramatically, and new skills may be available.  There is not much information out there reguarding “Break”, I will update as more becomes available.

Reactions:  The game looks like it would be great for people who enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series, as the style of fighting seems very similar; fast and fun.  The graphics look very impressive for the PSP, and some characters have been redone so they will fit in with the more dramatic characters.  Zidane in particular has been overhauled.

I was slightly disappointed that the game is a PSP exclusive.  Fighting games, in my opinion, are better for systems more suited for a multiplayer option.  There is a friend of mine who is obsesses with Sephiroth, and I would love to show him that the melodramatic Sephiroth could be easily beaten by the monkey-like Zidane.  I am hoping that Square Enix will consider making a PS3 port the same way that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection did.  There isn’t much out there about this game yet, but if you feel like it you can check out Square Enix’s official Japanese teaser page here.
