Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII Update Part I.
The past few days some new articles have popped up on sites like Famitsu.com regarding the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII series. Many of them have already been translated and discussed. I’m hooked on reading about the games, mainly Final Fantasy XIII. The stories, settings, and characters are all still somehow very unique–I don’t know how Square Enix can keep it up. Anyway, here is what we know so far:
Final Fantasy XIII
Setting:
The world of Final Fantasy XIII is divided into two distinct halves. The first is known as Cocoon. Cocoon is a large metal city that floats over the surface of the world which is called Pulse. The surface of Pulse is infested with monsters and beasts, for this reason few people live there.
Coccon
Pulse
Both Cocoon and Pulse are maintained by their own crystals. 1,300 years before the events of the game, the Cocoon crystal told the race far’Cie (Farushi) to construct “a paradise for humanity”. Cocoon was the result.
Now, all is not well on the floating city of Cocoon. The people fear that the city will fall from the sky. This fear leads the holy goverment to crack down on the cities inhabitants, banishing anyone with ties to Pulse.
Characters:
Each of the currently known characters reside on Pulse:
The setting of the game is what got me excited about Final Fantasy XIII. The use of a limited environment–in this case Cocoon–is popular in anime and video games because it makes telling a story easier, but it isn’t always done right. Square Enix manages to keep it interesting though.
At first glance, it almost seems like the player will be controlling the “bad guys.” The trio is attempting to destroy Cocoon, which was created because of a crystal. The crystals are generally a symbol of balance in the Final Fantasy series.
Also, destroying Cocoon will potentially kill many people. This reminds me of destroying the first reactor in Final Fantasy VII. Square Enix seems to enjoy playing the social misfit card.
Anyway, I am sure it only appears that the trio is evil on the surface. Their true intentions are probably good. My guess is that the key is the key to understanding their actions lies in finding out more about the strange race of fal’Cie, and exactly what l’Cie do as well. Until then I’ll keep my eyes open.
