Yesterday a trailer for Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns leaked after being uploaded a touch early by GameTrailers. Square Enix is pulling the videos off YouTube nearly as quickly as users upload them, so I can’t say how long the above video will be live. Luckily, I took some screenshots just in case!
So the trailer opens with Lightning stepping off of a train:

Wait, how did that get in there? I meant to show you THIS picture instead!

Lightning’s monologue explains that she has 13 days to save the game’s new setting or something… Honestly, I can’t even pretend that any of this stuff makes sense when stacked upon the shit sandwich that is the game’s story thus far. If you are curious, here’s a more concise writeup.
The trailer shows off some platforming mechanics which include jumping and climbing across European-looking architecture with her snazzy new white cloak trailing behind her:
Wait, how did that get in there? I meant to show you THIS picture instead!
Only moments after Lighting makes like a firefighter down that pole, we see her battling a Behemoth-looking monster in the game’s flashy new battle system:
Wait, how did that get in there? I meant to show you THIS picture instead!

Oh man, look at all those new gauges! I think some may have even been MOVED AROUND! I’m sure this will turn a relatively hands-off battle system into a much more engaging experience! Finally, the trailer ends with Lightning removing her sunglasses with ATTITUDE:
Wait, how did that get in there? I meant to show you THIS picture instead!

I know it’s too early to call, but I really believe that Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns is shaping up to be one of Square Enix’s most unique and innovative titles to date. The trailer confirms that we can expect this blockbuster sometime next year. Bad news for fans though, this will be Lightning’s last game:

Whoa, I just had a thought. Just because this is Lightning’s last appearance, that doesn’t mean there can’t be MORE Final Fantasy XIIIs! Can we expect Final Fantasy XIII-4 in 2014? God, I hope so.
