Hayarigami Port Coming to Nintendo DS in Japan

Were you confused by the title of this game? Does this confusion feel the same as when you downloaded a bizarre bonus character in Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice named Kogure Souichirou? Don’t worry, the two are related.

Hayarigami was a horror adventure game first released for the PS2 back in 2004 in Japan.  It was the subject of much praise and received a port to the PSP, a mobile phone version, and even a movie spin-off.  Now, a Nintendo DS port of the original is being produced by NIS Software.

The game puts you in the shoes of new detective at a police agency where a series of bizarre urban-legend related incidents have been occurring.  The urban legends covered in the game include Ouija, strange chain-mails, and demons.  What fun!  The tools at your disposal for uncovering the cause of these incidents are none other than your bravery and wits – literally.

Kazami

Kogure

Kazami, the new detective and player’s character gifted with a high level of cognitive reasoning.
Kogure, the stern Police Sergeant skilled in multiple forms of martial arts.

Hayarigami uses a system which combines compiling an extensive clue and information database with an educated guess system.  Acquiring info occasionally requires Bravery points, which are consumed when the player performs an act of bravery.  Using these points up means that the player will need to be careful what actions they choose to perform.

Guesses can range from the scientific to the occult, and once a guess is established it can be put through “Self-Questioning” or “Logical Reasoning” for further screening.  I realize this may be a bit confusing, but basically the player acquires and filters information to draw conclusions.  Depending on the outcome of your cases, there are a variety of different endings the player can achieve.  Trust me when I say this is a nut-shelled explanation.

I have never really played any of these Nintendo DS games that are kinda like a picture book.  I am not sure why, they seem to be pretty popular…  I would definitely like to try Hayarigami due to the horror factor which I love and all the acclaim it received in Japan.

I am really hoping that NIS America will consider bringing this game over to the West for the first time ever.  I think it has a good shot since NIS America has been localizing just about 100% of the games their parent company makes as of late.  Hayarigami comes out on June 11th in Japan.
