Hoshino Speaks about Catherine and the State of Atlus

Yesterday the official Catherine blog updated with a comment from the game’s director Hoshino Katsura.  This seems like quite a coincidence considering that is also the day that Index announced its merger with Atlus.

Here’s what he had to say (please note this is a rough translation):

Everyone, hello.  This is Atlus’s Hoshino.

I am the director of the recently announced Catherine.  One way or another I have heard people saying “Persona team, make another Persona!” or “I don’t really understand but I am excited!”

(Perhaps I should say, your excitement comes from a sexual excitement)

When you think of adult talk, of course it probably turns a little dirty.

Before the release, this and that will be explained, you might think it’s a little boring, but games are not cheap, so I would like to introduce the content development team.  Little by little, I want to introduce how the game was made and its highlights, as well as Hoshino, Soejima, and Meguro.

Bye for now (literally ‘dewa dewa’)

Ah… Actually, not ‘dewa dewa’

Things have gotten a bit noisy outside of the development room, but that’s OK.  We, the development team, from now on and for a long time will endeavor to create.  Or course I don’t mean just the Persona team, also the teams working on other titles.

The world is a busy place but we are doing our best and with support will adapt.

So there are a couple messages we can take away from this comment.

First, when a developer announces a new IP, they probably don’t appreciate the world asking why they aren’t making sequels like the rest of the gaming world.  Just like the popular series their name may appear on, the new IPs take a lot of work — probably more.

Next, it does seem like things are tough at Atlus even for the top brass.  Is Hoshino using the blog as a way of letting Atlus fans know that there is trouble in paradise, or is he trying to reassure us that things will be OK?  I kind of feel like the latter but I am not sure.  Either way I hope things are going OK and I will be keeping a close eye on the Catherine website for more updates.
