Konami: ?

So Kojima Production’s last countdown resulted in, as many suspected, another countdown.  The new countdown, however, is not without a few new clues as to what the mystery announcement will be in regards to.  In addition to the mysterious “5″, or “S”, 3 new characters now appear in the background of the teaser site:

I spent all of last night trying to concretely label each character, which had me turning my laptop on its side, upside-down, etc.

Ultimately, no one can say with any certainty what the characters mean, as each one is vague enough so that multiple conclusions can be reached:

• 5:  This can either be a “5″, an “S.”  I have even heard some people claim it’s a backwards “Z” for Zone of the Enders.
• 3:  Looks like a 3, pretty simple.  Rotate it -90 degrees and it becomes a pretty convincing “M” as in Metal Gear.  Why stop there, we can flip it and it becomes a “W” for… walrus?
• E:  Possibly the character with the least confusion, however rotate it 90 degrees and you’ve your yourself another “M” or -90 degrees for a “W”.
• ?: This could be a lowercase “e”, which seems unnecessary to me as the other “E” is probably the most obvious of the bunch. Many Japanese sites believe it is the kanji for the 6th of the Chinese zodiac animals: the snake.  Possibly hinting at another Metal Gear Solid.  Flip it and you have a lowercase “g” as in, oh I don’t know, gargoyle, goose, gopher, gear.  That gives us “M”, “G”, and “S” if we use our imaginations.

The pattern at which they are displayed makes deciphering it even more difficult as it changes over time.  Here is what I have discovered concerning the pattern:

• the ? character is always 3 characters away from the next ? character, making it the only one with a fixed position in the sequence.
• The three characters between the two ?’s will always include only one of 5, 3, or E in any combination.  There are no repeating characters within this 3 character combination  (i.e you will never see …?5E5?… etc.).
• No two characters will ever repeat.

What does this tell you?  Well it’s obvious isn’t it?  Basically it’s not random like many people are claiming.  There is some logic behind it all, but what it actually means I am not sure.  Odds are that not even Steven Hawking could figure it out before June 1st.

Anyway, I have pretty much given up on trying to figure it out, it’s just too damn vague at this point and I don’t feel like getting excited about 2 more fucking countdowns.

Here is my guess:  A Metal Gear Solid game for the PSP.  There, I feel better.
