Konami: 5

5

OK, let’s face it, everyone is probably pretty sick of hearing about other people’s speculations concerning the Konami countdown page which appeared over the weekend.  For that reason I won’t hold it against you if you simply ignore this post entirely and instead go make yourself a glass of chocolate milk and take a nap.  That sounds pretty good, huh…

Wow, you showed up.  I am impressed.

First I will give a rundown of what we know concerning the page.  It is obviously related to the teaser image featured in Famitsu magazine last week.  We weren’t able to make many concrete conclusions about this image, other than it appears Old Snake’s head is in the clouds.  The date given is when the countdown timer appeared.

The countdown site features a field somewhat similar to the one shown in the teaser image.  This field does look a little greener, and a bit brighter.  Perhaps this suggests some passage of time?

Weather fluctuates depending on when you visit the site:

These icons were found by some people who dug around in the flash coding.  It looks to me like a cycle slowly revealing more of the sky, which seems to be where our answers lie.  There are 5 stages of weather, and when the teaser site first opened, it was on “cloudy,” today when I checked it out, it was on “stormy.”  It would appear that the site will go through a weather change each day up until the 22nd when the timer ends and the sky will apparently clear giving us our much needed answers.

There are some theories that the timer is simply a countdown to yet another series of countdowns, totaling 5 which ultimately expire on the first day of E3 when an actual announcement is made.  I sure hope that isn’t the case…  It would, however, give a possible significance to the number 5 (if it is a 5 and not the speculated “S”).

Another clue many people are citing is the meta keywords given in the source for the site.  They are as follows:

Hideo Kojima, MGS, METAL GEAR, NEXT, game, konami, kojima game, KJP, Kojima Production

The obvious conclusion which can be drawn: Metal Gear Solid 5.  This conclusion just feels too obvious, doesn’t it?  Also, it seems awfully quick for a new game to be announced.  The gap between Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 was nearly 4 years, but Metal Gear Solid 4 was released only 1 year ago come June 16th.  HOWEVER, Metal Gear Solid 4 was first announced in 2005 at Tokyo Game Show, meaning it was hyped for about 3 years before its release.  Assuming that a new game were announced now, that would allow for about the same amount of hype/development.

The overwhelming theory is that it will be for a game where Raiden is the main character, due to his name meaning lightning and the strange focus on weather.  The image of the field seems to suggest the past to me, almost looking like an old ragged photo.  This would fall contrary to the future/present 2014 where Raiden exists, so I don’t really buy this.  To me it feels like if it truly is another Metal Gear Solid, that it will be a prequel of sorts similar to Snake Eater.  I suppose it could take place between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 and be about Raiden losing his identity as Jack and getting all his crazy body modifications.  That would be pretty fucking badass.

The other theory is that due to some Twittered bullshit, people think that it may be a game for the Xbox 360.  This I find hard to believe.  Making a game for the 360 would actually require the next game in the series to go backwards in terms of graphics, as the Xbox lacks Blu Ray capabilities.  Kojima is not a fan of moving backwards…  Let’s face it, Xbox fans have been lusting after a Metal Gear Solid title for ages, it only makes sense that a rumor like that would appear in the face of all this uncertainty.  At this time the only systems I won’t rule out are the PS3, PSP, and a possible next-gen Xbox, which is rumored to be unveiled at E3.

This probably didn’t clear much up for anyone, I know I don’t feel like I have much more of a handle on all this.  I can rule things out with logic, but it is hard to come up with new possibilities without more clues from Kojima and friends.  If it is a new MGS… oh boy…
