Link Love — Review: NonNonBa by Shigeru Mizuki [Via fox & cactus]

You may not know this about me, but I have a soft spot for old school manga.  I love the historical and cultural insight as well as the different themes and tones explored by the medium.  I’ve recently been reading the works of Shigeru Mizuki and wanted to write a review for his newest work to be localized, NonNonBa.  Sarah was nice enough to allow me to post the review on her recently launched blog all about her exploits in the indie comic world.  You can check out the review here and find a teaser of the manga itself on Drawn and Quarterly’s blog.

A new English Mizuki work? I'll have to check this one out. He's what helped influence our subject matter for our webcomic Kitsune Kiki. If you like this, you may be interested in another work of his (the first one translated into English) that's titled "Onward towards our noble deaths". I think you were close in your wondering if Mizuki liked to show how foolish war is. He was a soldier himself (and not only was severely injured, but lost an arm during WWII, which given his artistic talents is pretty amazing), and this book is sort of an look at the final weeks of WWII for a Japanese Infantry unit and ultimately how damning the nature of war is!
