Today Nintendo released a press statement announcing their long rumored, next hand-held platform. The hardware has been temporarily named the “Nintendo 3DS”. The main feature that Nintendo has revealed is autostereoscopic 3D. Basically through autostereoscopy, 3d is achieved by making an image visible to only the left eye, and only the right eye, producing a layered 3d effect (like a moving “Magic Eye”). I am sure the above image makes that clear though!
The only other known ability of the 3DS is backwards compatibility with Nintendo DS and DSi titles. As many people have already concluded, this makes it quite likely the unit will also have 2 digital cameras, both front and back. An SD slot is also a possibility and I would not be surprised to learn that the DS XL’s screen dimensions are replicated. No word on the rumored accelerometer or many other features fans have speculated.
The device will go on sale March of next year, which is quite a wait. However, Nintendo mentions in their press release that the 3DS will be shown off at this year’s E3 expo in Los Angeles. As some of you may be aware, I am planning on attending, so I should be able to get a hands-on with the system come June 15th! Expect a number of photos and my thoughts in detail.
I am very relieved to learn that I won’t have to wear any goofy, expensive glasses while playing games on the 3DS! Since I already wear glasses, that would be a deal breaker for me… This technology is fairly new, so I applaud Nintendo on their cutting-edge-ness. I hope this doesn’t mean that, as we saw with motion control, all the competing systems will have to replicate this technology a few years down the road. As there is not really anywhere else to go graphically, that will probably be the case.
