NIS Unveils Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman What Did I Do to Deserve This?

Earlier this week NIS teased us by stating they would be announcing a new title for the PSP.  Speculation was rampant, but no one I know  guessed it.  The title was developed by Acquire and released in Japan back in December entitled ??????????? (Yuusha no Kuse Ni Namaikida).  It’s difficult to translate, but if I had to I would say something like “The hero’s constant meddling.”  The English title NIS America has given the game is Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman What Did I Do to Deserve This? (HIP from here on).

Anyway, HIP is a strategy title where your goal is to create a dungeon to protect the Overlord from various intruding warriors and heroes.  You are in a sense taking control of the “boss” or AI of most games, and going up against the good guy, or who is generally the player character.  I hope that makes sense…

Dungeons are created by digging into the earth, and maintenance includes creating monsters and keeping the different species in check and well fed.  You also need to pick a safe spot for the Overlord.  Resources can be found throughout the soil which are used to create units.  Having different units who consume one another means your dungeon will have a more diverse food chain, thus larger more powerful monsters can be created.  Here is a food pyramid showing the monster hierarchy:

As with most games, the Dragon takes the crown, although it looks like he would have a hard time choking down a Demon.  I am really intrigued by this monster system, I think it’s very unique and I love that they eat each other.  Still I could see myself getting attached to my units so I am not sure how I would feel about watching them devour one another…

There are 66 different invading hero units, each trying to bring peace back to the world–we can’t have that now can we?  Heroes pour in from the opening of your dungeon and do battle with your created monsters on a quest to drag the Overlord to the surface.  These annoyances also are capable of a few tricks to watch for, such as various magics.  They can also set a torch on the dungeon wall which will remain lit for a set period of time, replenishing health to heroes who bask in its glow.  The impudence…

The player assumes the role of the God of Destruction, although all you ever see of him is a pickax.  The Overlord you are trying to protect is named “Badman.”  This is definitely a bit of NIS’s unique flair, since in the Japanese version he is just called “Devil King.”  The comments he makes throughout the game are characteristically narcissistic for a NIS game, which seems like it would help keep gameplay amusing.

Starting tomorrow, anyone who gets the secret code from NIS America’s HIP press release, can try to follow a series of clues to get privileged information concerning the game.  Since I have nothing better to do at work, I think I will give it a try.  Let’s hope the site works though, I find I often have issues with NIS flash based websites…

I am impressed with NIS America’s selection of a new game to localize.  I appreciate the fact that I have never heard of this game, and although HIP is kinda like a strategy-puzzle game I would be interested in playing it.  Certainly moreso than NIS America’s other puzzle title, Puchi Puchi Virus which I have no intention of playing… ever.
