Phantom Brave Wii Port Gets New Scenarios

New scenario

NIS revealed the identity of the mystery character appearing in the Wii port of Phantom Brave.  She is the star of a new scenario added to the game entitled “Another Marone.”  They do look pretty similar, huh?  Note the hair color, style, and well situated quiff.  It’s eerie…

Anyway as you may notice she also has a companion of the fungi persuasion.  Here is a better look:

Kurone

Goddoerin

Kurone Goddoerin

Marone learns from some new phantoms who appear on the island that there is someone killing many people throughout Ivoire.  Ash and Marone go on a quest to find the culprit which brings them to Kurone and Goddoerin. Kurone’s name is kind of a play on the Japanese word for dark or evil (kuro) and Marone’s name.  Goddoerin appears to believe that he is a god, but I am not sure which of the duo is really calling the shots, or if they are the real culprits…

Walnut

“Damn, what have you woken up?  What are you guys thinking!”

The phantoms who reveal this information are some familiar faces as the image above may reveal: Sprout, Walnut, and Raphael. All three become phantom companions for this portion of the game. I could not find any screens of them in action, so I cannot confirm if they are controllable or not.

I sure hope so – Walnut is one of my favorite characters in the game.  I never wanted to drink cheap wine so bad in my life…

Phantom Brave is definitely one of my favorite tactical RPGs for both its story and unique battle system.  I am glad to see that it is being re-made, and I think pairing the playfulness of the game with the Wii is a great combination.

Ryu Ga Gotoku 3: I Need a Vacation

Ryu ga Okinawa!

I live in New England where it has been demonically cold since November.  Today while looking over some screenshots of Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (or Yakuza 3) I was filled with the intense urge to go on a vacation.  The game takes place on the tropical Japanese island of Okinawa, a place near and dear to me and Foxes.

Foxes has a bunch of family in Okinawa who are awesome people.  She has bounced back and forth between there and America countless times in her life.  I was lucky enough to go with her on two occasions and can say without a doubt it is the greatest place on earth.

In Yakuza 3, Kazuma opens an orphanage in Okinawa attempting to bury his past and start over.  If that was all that happened, it would be a pretty lame game.  Luckily for us, some thugs decide to muscle in on his new found utopia forcing him to violently defend it.

The story is very typical of yakuza culture: an outcast of the norm of society, fighting for others like him who no one else fights for.  Many individuals who were/are yakuza claim that they are the result of Japan’s stringent uniformity, feeling that they cannot fit in, they band together and survive however possible.

In Yakuza 3, the player has nearly unlimited freedom, and can partake in many mini-games including karaoke, golf, darts etc.  The fighting system seems to have improved dramatically since the 2nd volume, and has become markedly more violent as well.

The game is released in Japan on February 26th, and I am seriously contemplating importing it.  I was disappointed to see that Ryu Go Gotoku Kenzan! was never localized by Sega despite rave reviews and obvious awesomeness.  I hope the same fate wont befall Yakuza 3.  Extensive translating and voice acting leads me to believe that may be the case.

Final Fantasy XIII: An Ally Appears

Sazu

Square Enix surprised the hell out of me by announcing another ally for Final Fantasy XIII.  His full name is Sazh Katsuroy and he wields dual handguns.  He appears to come to Lightning’s aid at some point during her raid on Cocoon.  The official site for Final Fantasy XIII has not been updated with any info on Sazh yet, but I am sure it will be in the near future.

In addition to maintaining a sweet afro, Sazh also appears to be caring for an adernable baby chocobo.  I am pleased to see the very first appearance of the chocobo in next generation of consoles as well as the next Final Fantasy.

I don’t know why but Sazh totally reminds of LJ from Resident Evil Apocalypse, just a braver version:

Atlus: ???

???

So I wake up today around 1, hungover, not really wanting to solve a mystery and Atlus has to go and send this image!  While I complain deep down I truly love Atlus for pulling this kinda shit.  It helps to keep the brain from stagnating, and it’s just plain exciting.

The first thing my mind thinks is Kuma/Teddie… wearing Naoto’s clothes.  I am not saying that has any validity, or makes any sense, it’s just the first thing I thought.  Sometimes first impressions, not muddled by logic, can be the most accurate.  Upon some further inspection I realize the proportions are all wrong–it can’t be Kuma/Teddie.

I check and see if there is anything on Atlus’s website to give any additional insight.  Nothing.  I check all my Japanese sources to see if there are any Shin Megami Tensei games I have somehow overlooked (ha).  Nothing.

OK Modified initial-theory-that-also-makes-no-sense: Jack Frost wearing Naoto’s hat.  Seems like the most likely, and yet even more befuddling.  Who else wears a hat like that…  Then it hits me like a cement truck filled with walrus blubber:  Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs King Abadon.  It’s been out long enough for localization to begin!  Of course, I thought it was Naoto’s hat but it is really Raidou’s!  And that is also his cape around Jack’s shoulders!

My weary mind can resume barely functioning until Atlus decides to fuck with me again.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4: Nice Watermelons

Chie in Yukata

Persona 4 is a game deeply steeped in Japanese culture. I was surprised to see that Atlus left the game alone in this regard, expecting that their fans would appreciate the game straying as little as possible from the original.  By playing the game I have become a bit nostalgic for my time in Japan and thought I would explain some of the elements of the game’s cultural references.

Kotatsu:  The other heat

When winter in Persona 4 sets in, Nanako demands that the kotatsu be pulled out.  The protagonist obliges only to find it non-operational.  Why is this enough to make a high school boy cry?

In Japan, most homes are not heated the way they are in America.  In the absence of burning fossil fuels, many electric alternatives are utilized.  They generally affect a small area rather than an entire home and are only used when necessary–if no one is home, heating devices are turned off.  This system is primarily for the purpose of conserving energy.

The kotatsu is a very common form of the type of heating I just described.  A small electric heater is placed under a folding table and a blanket then placed over the table.  Chilly individuals may lift up a portion of the blanket and sit with the blanket in their lap, keeping the lower portion of the body quite toasty.  It is also common for a basket of mikan (kind of like a mandarin orange) to be placed on the surface of the table and consumed by anyone who gathers ’round.

Watermelon: Fire and Ice

NG5 actually asked me about this one.  When the protagonist and his friends share a watermelon, Yosuke mentions that he wishes they could be eating it on the beach.

Summer in Japan is all about the beach.  But similar to kotatsu, a fruit companion is a must for this season activity: ice cold watermelon.  Nothing beats the heat like crisp, cold watermelon consumed in the sun by the roaring ocean.  If a trip to the ocean isn’t possible, watermelon consumption on its own is acceptable as a Summer tradition.

Seasonal imagery is important to Japan when it comes to evoking emotions or nostalgia.  This can be seen in the use of kigo in haiku, or something more simple like video game characters enjoying watermelon.

Culture Festivals:  More fun than detention

About halfway through the school year, the protagonist’s homeroom votes on what they should do for their cultural festival.

In both high school and college, students may be required to partake in a school-wide cultural fair.  While the fair itself may last for only 1-2 days, the preparation leading up to is considerably longer and very apparent.  The school itself is transformed into a festival of individual booths which sell festival foodstuffs, offer games, or highlight a clubs accomplishments.  The fair is also a chance for students to meet others with similar interests who may not be in their homerooms.

Junes: Everyday young life

Everyone’s favorite place to work, shop and vacation in Persona 4 has got to be Junes.

In Japan there are two kinds of businesses:  small, locally run shops, and gargantuan all-inclusive depaato, or department stores.  When I say all inclusive, I mean you can purchase a sack of fruit, a big screen TV and a pair of jeans.  Junes, while a fictional depaato, is definitely based off actual department stores throughout the country.  As these business move into rural areas like fictional Inaba, smaller family run businesses such as Konishi liquors  feel the effects.
