LittleBigPlanet’s Soundtrack Crusade

As some of you may have heard, Sony crushed the hearts of PS3 owners by recalling LittleBigPlanet, and stating that the game will ship next week on the 27th.  The reason for the delay was that some individuals noticed that one song in the game makes two references to the Qur’an.  Here are translations:

The words are:

1- In the 18th second: “?? ??? ????? ?????” (“kollo nafsin tha’iqatol mawt”, literally: ‘Every soul shall have the taste of death‘).

2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: “?? ?? ????? ???” (“kollo man alaiha fan”, literally: ‘All that is on earth will perish’).

My initial reaction was the same as most people’s: rage.  I assumed that the delay had something to do with the connection some ignorant individuals form between terrorism and the Muslim religion.  Osama bin Laden is in our video games!

After rage came curiosity.  I did some digging and learned that those who opposed the song were those of the Muslim faith.  In the post which brought the subject to SCE’s attention, the author solid_08 explains: Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending.

While I admit I am still disappointed about the delay, I don’t want to see LBP associated with a religious controversy.  Also I would hate to see it offend people on such a sensitive topic, so I feel the decision was just.

It’s too bad that the creators didn’t realize this before the initial pressing was recalled.  Some websites like eBay are selling the recalled copies, which I doubt is legal.  Legal or not it is tempting…  I am slightly hesitant since I am not sure if the recalled version would be compatible for online content, which is a huge part of LBG’s appeal.

I think SCE made the right decision, and (as tough as it is) we gamers just need to be a bit patient.  LittleBigPlanet will be a great game, and everyone should be able to appreciate it.

Persona 4 Guide Pre-Order Available at Doublejump Books

I don’t know how I missed this one! Doublejump Books now has their guide for Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 available for pre-order on their website for $19.99.  The guide will ship on 12/02/08, although I got my Disgaea 3 guide before its scheduled ship date, so who knows.  I really loved their Persona 3 guide; it was characteristically in-depth and helped me maximize my year very well.  This guide is said to include:

  • Complete walkthrough with Monthly Planners to help budget your time
  • See all the endings
  • Find out what’s of worth on the home shopping network
  • Uncover all secrets
  • Complete every quest
  • Complete data on Social Links
  • Uncover every character’s secret Persona
  • Full list of all items, skills, personas and enemies
  • plus much more!
  • As an added bonus, those who pre-order will receive a free priority shipping coupon code.  The code, p4pre, is good for $6.30 off of shipping.

I have already spoken at length about the superiority of Doublejump Books’ guides.  But what I like best about them, is I can purchase them BEFORE the respective game is released, granting some nice study time.  With this code, there is no difference between buying the guide online, or in-store, so buy it!

Also I noticed that now ALL Disgaea 3 guides purchased from Doublejump Books.com get a signature from djpubba.  Here I thought I was special.

    More Metal Gear Solid Merchandise?

You heard right, Konamistyle has just revealed 3 new t-shirts to accentuate the excitement of the upcoming Meme Expansion for Metal Gear Online.  The shirts are available for pre-order at Konamistyle for 3,465 yen (around $34).

SOP Shirt C-Box Shirt Animal Shirt

I think the C-Box shirt is my favorite. According to Konamistyle’s website, it is selling more than the other 2. I love how Old Snake is peeking out of the back of the shirt… genius! You gotta love the engrish too.

The Animal shirt is definitely my second favorite. I love how the designers used the various animal badges the player can earn in MGS4. Also the use of colors is great.

If these shirts don’t impress you with their design, you should check out the awesome launch site for them here.

A while back Konami also designed a set of 4 pantless, uber-adorablized figures from MGS4.  The set is dubbed Metal Gear Sold 4 x Figumate Sweet Snake:

The set includes the following characters:

    • Snake
    • Raiden
    • Otacon
    • Ocelot

Raiden is definitely the coolest of the 4, and for some reason I am attracted to Ocelot…  I think he may look a little too much like a girl.  If you are interested in purchasing the set, it’s available for $28.79 here at KidNemo.  The estimated date of availability is the end of January 2009.

As for the shirts, once they are released on the 27th of this month, I am sure we’ll see them flooding eBay.  And thankfully, they are available in sizes S-XL!

Fragile Gets A Little Sadder: Teshima Aoi

    YouTube Preview Image

The end of the world sure looks bittersweet in this newest CP for Fragile: Goodbye Ruins of the Moon.  As I was watching the video, it dawned on me that I recognized the singer of the cripplingly sad song–it is Teshima Aoi

The song which made me first know about Teshima was Teru no Uta (?????), or Therru’s Song from Studio Ghibli’s animated film Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea).  Here is the song that made my Japanese teacher cry when he heard it on the radio while driving to work, along with some scenes from Gedo Senki.  Brace yourself.

    YouTube Preview Image

Real men cry too… Real men cry too…

Teshima Aoi performed live at Bandai-Namco’s Fragile booth on the last day of Tokyo Game Show 2008.  So far she sings two songs for the game, the opening theme entitled Light (?), and the ending theme entitled Moon’s Warmth (??????).  I am not sure which song appears on the video, but I am guessing it is Light.  You can check out Teshima’s main website here.

This video is the longest yet when it comes to Fragile.  It appears some force tries to come between Seto and Ren being together.  I think there were about 3 scenes where they were seperated by a fence or something…

I was glad the video showed some of the support characters and even gave them a chance to talk!  I think Psy (the floating girl) may be my favorite character.  I love her character design and the way she talks.  I wish I had a ghost friend!

OMG Toys: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII

The legacy of Final Fantasy VII refuses to fade away. With each addition to the story, the amount of merchandise also increases.  Luckily the quality seems to only improve.  This next line of Final Fantasy VII figures from the PSP game Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII are due out some time in January next year.

    • Cloud Strife
    • height: 21 cm
    • price: $39.90
    • The conflicted hero of the Final Fantasy VII franchise.  Here he appears in his true form during the goings-on before Final Fantasy VII.
    • Aerith Gainsborough
    • height: 19 cm
    • price: $39.90
    • The young flower girl with a strong connection to the planet and lifestream.  It’s AERITH.
    • Zach Fair
    • height: 22 cm
    • price: $39.90
    • Cloud’s war-buddy and the man whom he creates an identity from.  The figure features the earliest Buster Sword.  Put it on your Advent Children Cloud action figure to rip a hole in the action-figure-space-time-continuum!

It would be awesome to have all three of these figures, but at 40 bucks a pop… that’s a bit steep.  I think just about everyone has at least one Cloud Strife action figure, I personally have 3 and I admit that’s too many.

I really like Aerith’s outfit in Crisis Core, but this is Zack’s first appearance as an action figure, although he has appeared as a statue.  In my opinion he is possibly the most desirable of the 3.  Sorry Cloud, hope that doesn’t cripple you mentally and cause you to develop a disorder where you don’t know your true identity.
