Skype for Sony Playstation Portable in Japan

skypeonpsp.jpg

It looks like Sony is ready to roll out new software for the Sony PSP to work with free Internet calling program Skype:

Special microphones for PSP’s Skype feature will go on sale in Japan on March 19 at 2,500 yen (US$24) each and 4,000 yen (US$39) for two, and software will be upgraded a day earlier.

Not sure why there was such a delay considering the Skype feature has been available to the West since January, but this might prove a good sales boost for both companies.  Skype is the MVP when it comes to calling internationally for free, and has helped me connect with my family back in America without much trouble.  I do have some problems with lag depending on the Internet speed, which might prove crucial to those connecting their PSPs to it (and essentially to other users.)  Thoughts?

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Merchandise: PVC Figures

Persona Protagonist Figure

In case anyone out there doesn’t believe there is enough overpriced Persona 3 merchandise out there, I figured I would give you guys a heads up on some upcoming PVC figures. Probably to celebrate the release of Person 3 FES, OrchidSeed Co., Ltd. will be releasing a 22 cm Metis figure. The figure is scheduled to be released in June of 2008.

In addition to Metis, Alter Co., Ltd is releasing a Mitsuru figure at the same time. Last year Alter Co. also released an Aigis figure, which you can check out here. These are high quality figures, and they are released in small numbers. For this reason if you wish to purchase one, I highly recommend doing so as early as possible. You may reserve or purchase them at sites like Play-Asia, and beNippon. The price range varies from about $60-70 dollars.

New Makai Senki Disgaea 3 Information: Geo Blocks

Disgaea 3 geo-blocks feature

I am sure any veteran of the Disgaea series has had experience with the geo-blocks feature. These little blocks can be your best friend, or the biggest obstacle of a random dungeon. In true Nippon Ichi fashion, Makai Senki Disgaea 3 will be changing the system up a bit to make things more interesting.

As you can see from the picture, geo-blocks are no longer pyramid shaped, they are now large boxes. With their new shape, comes the ability to stack geo-blocks on top of one another. As you may have guessed, this allows for multiple effects to be added to geo-panels, without the geo-blocks having to be scattered all over the map.

Walk on geo blocks in Disgaea 3

Characters now have the ability to stand on geo-blocks and walk over them. This should make things easier when going through random dungeons. The character who is standing on the geo-block will receive the effect of the block as long as he or she or it is standing on it.

These two features allow for a new type of map which will either be a lot of fun or really annoying. They are called “geo-block puzzle maps”.

In these maps there will be enemies, or some kind of goal, which is out of reach due to an obstruction made of geo-blocks. The player must carefully choose which geo-block to destroy first. If done correctly, the player can set off a chain which can highly boost the bonus gauge, and do decent damage to any enemies standing on the blocks.

Tekken 6 Arcade Preview

dsc07737.JPG

The other day I was walking the streets of Kobe with my girlfriend when we spotted a Namcoland, a type of Japanese arcade. I was feeling lucky and figured I would try and win some stuffed animals when I came across an advertisement for Tekken 6. I took a picture and headed inside hoping to see more. I was completely unaware that the game had been released in its arcade form, so I was pretty surprised to see it.

It cost 100 yen to play, which is roughly one US dollar, but you get what you pay for in Japan.

Me playing Tekken 6

This photo was taken with a cell phone, so I apologize if the quality isn’t outstanding. As you may be able to tell, for 100 yen you get to play Tekken 6 with your own enormous screen and speakers. It also had a chair, and a slot for a credit card if you are planning on getting comfortable. If someone wants to play against me, there is the exact same setup right next to me, and the two units are connected.

Let’s get into the gameplay: I chose Miguel since I have been interested in him after hearing about the four new characters. Miguel’s fighting style is filled with violent moves involving a bunch of headbutts and double-fisted slamming motions. His kicks were a little slow, but he feels like a well rounded character. When he crouches it looks like he is just watching his opponent, and not really blocking or anything–all of his stances are funny that way. He was a fun character to play.

I was doing pretty well and getting used to some of Miguel’s combos. He seems to have a few different while-rising combos that are pretty effective. In round 4 or so I came up against another of the games new characters, Zafina. Her fighting style is geared toward misdirection, as it often seem like she is going low, but then goes high or mid. Really annoying! Anyway, she beat me good.

I wanted to save my money, and I could imagine myself getting carried away, so I only played once. All in all the game doesn’t feel much different, but the graphics are greatly improved. Some of the areas I battled in were really nicely designed, and the opening sequences where the characters say their irritating catch-phrases really showed the power of the PS3.

Revelations: Persona Coming to the PSP in English

Persona Ad from 1997

Some sources out there are indicating that Revelations: Persona will be coming out for PSP. No clear date is given yet, or any details whatsoever, only word that Atlus is releasing a title for the PSP called “Persona”. I have already written an entry concerning the game’s localization for the Playstation. Hopefully, given the popularity of the series, the game will be released in its true, untampered form.

If this is the case, I would advise any Persona fans to avoid purchasing the Playstation version from sites like e-bay, since they are drastically overpriced. If the game comes out first in Japan, we can assume that there will be a direct translation made, rather than port of the old Playstation version to the PSP. I will continue to check until I find something in either Japanese or English, and report any findings as soon as I can.
