Digital Devil Saga

I recently made a post concerning the rarity of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, which has become available on Play-Asia. Some people were happy to hear the game was easier to find, and they didn’t need to spend close to $70 on eBay for it. Other people began asking me about Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (Part 1). Apparently the second installment is infinitely easier to find in stores, and the first is nearly impossible. I decided to do some digging for the sake of my loyal readers (haha).

Who would have guessed, but it appears that Gamestop (as of April 22, 2008) has used copies available for $39.99 hereicon. These copies are in stock and available to be shipped in 24 hours. I have checked Amazon.com, eBay, and Play-Asia among others. All of them are either overpriced or out of stock. I recommend acting fast if you want the game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 at Gamestop ($39.99) hereicon.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 at Amazon ($39.99) here.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne at Play-Asia ($44.90) here.

A story synopsis and explanation of gameplay elements can be found at the game’s official website.

Hi, discovered your blog a couple weeks ago and I like it quite a bit.

Question for you… if I haven’t played either Nocturne or DDS1 and can only afford one of them, which should I get? I’m aware that I’ll also have to track down DDS2 to get the full story.

It depends on what you want out of your game. In the long run DDS has more story and is a bit easier (but definitely not EASY), where Nocturne is harder and works more off of only the necessary story elements. I do not mean to say that Nocturne has a bad story, but DDS has a much more active story which is better at keeping the player involved. Nocturne is much more complex battle-wise, and the story is borderline depressing but very worth experiencing.
I recommend DDS if you are new to the MegaTen series, if you are looking for a challenge then get Nocturne.
Hope this helps! Thanks for the comment Savory, I am glad you like my site!

Thanks for the quick response! The site’s great, I found it while googling for info on Shiren. Your gaming tastes seem really close to my own. Anyway, I may have to go with Nocturne. Since I just picked up P3:FES, the chances of me playing through another big RPG in the near future may be slim. I’m probably just fooling myself if I think I could get through both DDS games. I do love a good gaming challenge too.

Yea both of the DDS games took me around 140 hours combined, but it was a very unique gaming experience. Nocturne is still insanely good, I hope you like it.
Furai no Shiren is a good series too, I am hoping we get the third game! I guess that’s a long ways off though…
Glad I could help you make this difficult decision, and I hope you enjoy Nocturne!

Good thing you bought both, they are fantastic.
I would really like to get my hands on the deluxe box of DDS1 with space for the second one, keep us updated if any other reprints occur. To bad i can’t walk into a gamestop and simply pick it up…

Wow Savory that is some great luck on your part. If I went to my local Gamestop and asked for those games I think I would get laughed at until I cried. Thanks for the link, it sounds like good news about Shiren, fingers crossed!
Lazy, I will definitely keep everyone posted, but a reprint of a special edition sounds like a stretch. It would be nice if they released a reprint with BOTH games in that snazzy box…

Yeah, the reprints of both are starting to trickle into Gamestop stores now. They’re selling them as used games, but they are actually brand new. Not sure why they sell them as used and gut them to put the empty box on the shelf, but it’s Gamestop so who knows. Now I need to track down DDS2 for a decent price…
