Red Dead Redemption: Multiplayer Free Roam Video

Rockstar continues their aggressive video campaign concerning Red Dead Redemption, finally delving into the online play which I was so curious about.  There were some rumors out earlier in the week which this video seems to substantiate.  Here are the main ideas at a glance:

  • Multi-player uses the same expansive map as single player mode.
  • Completing tasks online earns “experience points” which are used to upgrade your character, mounts, and titles.
  • You can either play solo or be a part of a posse or hunting posse.
  • Certain free roam missions require you to participate with others.
  • Up to 16 players can duke it out in a deathmatch.

I was wondering how Rockstar was going to work the online avatars for Red Dead Redemption.  Obviously there couldn’t be 100+ John Marstons running around.  It seems that depending on your experience level, different avatars will be available to the player.  I was hoping for a fully customizable avatar system, but I guess this is the second best option.  I wonder if the player can change their avatar’s outfit, or if each unit has inherent abilities…  Perhaps that’s where the different titles come into play?

This system seems very similar to the online feature in Grand Theft Auto IV, in fact it’s nearly identical with the exception of the fully integrated online map as opposed to a lobby system.  I never played very much of GTA IV, so I can’t really speak to its online play.  Ultimately what I have seen from the single player is what has me attracted to Red Dead Redemption, so online play is just added incentive.
