Today Atlus released a cut version of the second trailer for Shin Megami Tensei 4 on the game’s official website. The uncut version will be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show at the Sega booth. I guess Atlus sadly won’t be having their own booth this year.
The trailer shows a good deal of dungeon exploration which includes going up ladders/elevators, scanning environments, and encountering enemies. Dungeon exploration is not first-person as in past installments – rather, it’s over-the-shoulder third-person. The main character’s clothing changes in nearly every scene leading me to believe that changing armor also changes his appearance.
As for the battle system, it would seem that the player is able to control the main character and three demons for a party of four:
I believe the main character is named Flin/Flynn (フリン) based on the menu screen, though I had to really squint to make it out. Despite the advances behind dungeon crawling, I was a little bummed to see that battles maintain the first person 2-D style:
I admit I was hoping for the equivalent of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne in which all characters are displayed on screen fully rendered. I know the series’ roots are deeply old-school but part of what made Nocturne great was that it was a modernization of that same old-school formula. After that, this kind of feels like a step backwards. I will remain open-minded until more of the game is revealed, of course.
In addition to the long version of this trailer to be shown at Tokyo Game Show, there will also be a big reveal in Famitsu this Thursday. I’d imagine that will provide us with some concrete details about the game’s story and cast of characters. Look forward to an update before the week is out!
