Witch’s Tale: The Apprentice Witch and the Seven Princesses

Witch's Tale

NIS first announced Hitmaker’s Witch’s Tale last year, stating that it would receive an October release.  Obviously this never materialized, and any mention of the game ceased.  Today, Gpara published an in-depth article on the game concerning story, characters and battle system:

Over 1,000 years ago, a tribe of witches living below the surface of the earth arose, and did battle with the witches living on the surface.  The witches from below the earth used a magic square formation (DS screen perhaps) to control powerful magic and torment the witches on the surface.

The queen of the witches on the surface, Alice, got control of a book containing the secrets to the evil witches.  She used this power to seal the evil witches within the book, restoring peace to the surface.

Now much time has passed, and this story is once again coming alive.

Lidelle
  • Name: Lidelle
  • Main Character
  • “I am Lidelle.  I am a prodigy who plans on becoming the world’s most famous witch.”
  • Lidelle is a student attending a school for learning magic.  She is highly determined to become a witch and is very competitive.  What she may lack in ability, she makes up for in self-confidence.
Ruu
  • Name: Ruu
  • Support Character
  • “That is a cold way to talk… but it was my fault that the witches were released.”
  • Ruu is vampire who sleeps in a coffin.  He somehow figures out how to release the evil witches sealed within the ancient book. He is a gentleman who prefers to dine on a tomato than blood.  He takes the form of a bat when following Lidelle.
As the game’s title may suggest, there are seven princesses: each one governing over a respective kingdom in the world of the game.  The map to the right displays the world with it’s seven countries.  The country in the center, Lowrow, holds the door where book containing the evil witches was sealed.  The surrounding six nations are there to protect the door from being opened. world map

Each princess holds a key called “Mark of the Princess” and all 7 are required to open or close the door. After Lidelle and Ruu release the forces of evil, they go on a quest to attain each mark and undo their error.  Will they receive aid once again from the mysterious Princess Alice?

A game this unique of course needs a unique battle system, which I admit I don’t fully comprehend, but here is what I do know:

The player controls a party of 1-3 characters.  They are represented on the battle screen by the little green gems on the bottom screen to the left side.  The party can face up to 3 enemies designated A, B, and C (top).

The name for the battle system used in Witch’s Tale is Revolver Icon System.  Available actions are physical attack, item, magic and run away.  The selection icons for these actions can be seen on the bottom screen in the lower left corner (“i” for item, a shoe for run etc.).  After selecting the desired action, the icon is then dragged to the slot marked with the target enemies letter.  This can be seen in the screenshot on the right, where the arrows are pointing to where an action icon is being dragged.  Hope I didn’t lose you there.

At this time, much of the battle system is still a mystery.  It seems rather simple right now, but I am confident it will prove more complex.

Witch’s Tale is set to be released in Japan on May 28th and the game’s official website will launch a week from today.  I look forward to the update and hope for some decent videos of the battle system, or anything really.  I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around certain aspects of the game and would like to see some gameplay.  Wow, this post is really long – sorry about that.
